YOUR EXPERIENCE PROVIDER
Your local Tiwi Islands guide will show you their community on this cultural walking tour - an authentic Tiwi experience!
Comprising Bathurst and Melville Islands, the Tiwi Islands have a population of around 2500 and are known as 'the islands of smiles'. The Tiwi people are internationally renowned for their individual style of art including carvings and bright textile designs. Prized by collectors, many Tiwi artists have exhibited around the world.
From the SeaLink ferry landing, you'll wander up to the Tiwi Design art centre for a traditional 'Welcome to Country' smoking ceremony including totem dances. After a short morning tea break your local Tiwi guide will then show you through the Patakijiyali Museum where you will learn about the culture and history of the Tiwi People.
A visit to the Catholic Mission Precinct will follow, and this includes a stop at the old white wooden church featured in the 'Top End Wedding' movie.
Lunch is held at the Tiwi Design art centre and you'll experience an exclusive ‘behind-the-scenes’ screen printing session with Tiwi artists. This tour gives you the unique opportunity to create your own Tiwi style art piece – a T-shirt, tea towel or length of fabric to take home with you as a special memento.
This is a leisurely paced tour on ‘Tiwi Time’, and visitors get a good opportunity to spend time with the Tiwi people. You also have the opportunity to purchase unique and traditional Tiwi artworks including paintings, fabrics, carving, pottery and clothing at island prices.
The tour operates during the Dry Season (April – October) on Thursdays and Fridays as well as selected Mondays. Check the calendar for departure dates.
The tour departs Cullen Bay at 8:00am and returns at 5:45pm.
