Standley Chasm Angkerle Atwatye is a traditional Aboriginal womens’ cultural site located in a private flora and fauna reserve, surrounded by the West MacDonnell Ranges National Park. It is owned and operated by the Angkerle Corporation made up of Aboriginal members that are direct descendants from Aboriginal people that have lived in this area for thousands of years.
Take a short drive from Alice Springs to Standley Chasm Angkerle Atwatye an oasis in the Central Australian Desert, the jewel of the Larapinta Walking Trail, and a place of great cultural significance for Western Arrernte people.
On arrival, head to the Café to collect your access pass to the Chasm. This is a self-guided 2.4km round trip taking approximately 15 mins each way depending on your fitness level. The path has been upgraded to a Grade 1 Access path, making it accessible for wheelchairs however, the natural conditions and some rough surfaces require sensible walking shoes be worn and care taken.
This is a significant geological site that has a unique micro climate which has created distinctive features such as ancient Cycads and a myriad of rock types and pebbles that are thousands of years old, washed down from miles upstream.
Sections 3 and 4 of the Larapinta Walking Trail, which are highly recommended with spectacular landscapes, also commence from here, but do require some preparation. Our campgrounds can be used as a helpful base for day trips, overnight stays, transfers or food drops. We facilitate the NT Parks and Wildlife Walkers logbook and an extensive Larapinta Trail information point.
Also provided at the site - clean toilets, shower facilities, solar hot water, laundry and gas BBQs, and a café serving hot meals and coffee, making this a great place for bushwalkers rest and recovery.
