Standley Chasm, traditionally knowns as Angkerle Atwatye, welcome respectful visitors to this significant Women’s Dreaming site located in the West MacDonnell National Park. Participate in a half day tour to appreciate the deep understanding the Western Arrernte people have of the local plant and animal life, and their spiritual connection to this ancient environment.

Insights into your experience

Explore Standley Chasm a geological formation located west of Alice Springs with a local Aboriginal guide and learn about the geology, flora and fauna, bush medicine and bush tucker, weaponry and cultural history specific to this sacred Women’s Dreaming site.

The half day tour includes a morning tea consisting of scones, jam and cream with a cuppa tea or coffee on arrival, followed by a leisurely guided walk with your local Aboriginal guide.

Questions about tradition and contemporary cross-cultural issues are encouraged during cultural conversations raising awareness for lasting social benefits.

Following your guided walk, you will do a painting workshop, which explains traditional dot painting techniques and symbolism, and gives you the chance to create your own souvenir to take home. The tour concludes with a buffet lunch served on the veranda of the café.

Things to know

Tour departs daily at 11.00am from the Standley Chasm Café.

This is a 4.5 hour experience.

Cost includes:

  • Entry to Standley Chasm.
  • Informative walk with local Aboriginal guide and commentary
  • Western Arrernte Dot Painting Workshop, create your own souvenir to take home.
  • Morning tea of scones, jam and cream plus tea or coffee.
  • Buffet lunch - consists of cold meats, salads, breads, desserts and a fruit platter (Dietary options available).

Planning your trip

  • This experience caters for people with sufficient mobility to climb a few steps.
  • Grade 1 Access path – suitable for wheelchairs.
  • Sensible walking shoes should be worn and care taken.
  • All native plants and animals are protected.
  • Standley Chasm is located in a private flora and fauna reserve owned by the Iwupataka Land Trust and is operated by Angkerle Aboriginal Corporation.

Standley Chasm - Hugh, Northern Territory. The café is adjacent to the entry point at Standley Chasm.

Location

Standley Chasm - 50kms from Alice Springs (approx 40min drive). Drive West on Larapinta Drive until you see the turn off to Standley Chasm on the right.
