Tennant Creek & Barkly Region
If you’re keen to really get off the beaten track, Tennant Creek and the Barkly region are found in the Northern Territory’s very remote outback - around 1000km south of Darwin and 500km north of Alice Springs. The majority of Barkly residents are Aboriginal and include the communities of Ali Curung, Alpurrurulam, Ampilatwatja, Alparra and Wutunugurra.
You’ll find the town of Tennant Creek central to the Barkly area is a great option for a stopover. You can visit Aboriginal art centres, walk wildlife safari trails and dig deep with a visit to an abandoned underground mine. You can take bush tours from your base in Tennant Creek, including trips to the Karlu Karlu.
Aboriginal culture, vast, remote cattle stations and gold mining shaped the people and lives of those that reside in the Barkly, and it’s the people of the region will make your visit a highlight in the NT.
