And while travel plans are tricky at the moment, we have plenty of fun, educational and exciting activities right here in Western Australia. Activities to keep the whole family engaged, places where you can just let kids be kids and have fun learning about Aboriginal culture. Here are our picks of the best Aboriginal activities in Western Australia to entertain the kids and the whole family over the school holidays.

Ngilgi Cave Cultural Tour

Take the kids to an ancient battleground. Watch Aboriginal history and culture come to life. Ngilgi Cave in the Margaret River region, takes its name from the good ocean spirit who ousted the evil spirit, Wolgine, restoring water and food to the local Wardandi people. Join Josh “Koomal” Whiteland from Koomal Dreaming on the Ngilgi Cave Cultural Tours and get the kids off the couch and out into the bush. Take you little one star gazing these holidays! Did you know that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the world’s original and oldest Astronomers?  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people developed a number of practical ways to observe the Sun, Moon and stars to inform navigation, calendars, and predict weather. They also gave meaning to astronomical phenomena which informed science, law, art, creation narratives and social structure. On this magical night experiences the kids will Enjoy a guided outside laser tour to see a range of interesting targets in the night sky and get to look through a large telescopes in the observatory at the wonders of our universe.

Kayak and Wildlife Adventure

Have your kids got energy to burn? Looking for a fun, physical outdoor activity? Burn some energy and learn about magnificent Shark Bay World Heritage Area with its crystal clear turquoise waters. The area is teeming with wildlife and the kids will love seeing turtles, manta rays, dolphins and dugongs in the wild. Kayaking is the perfect way to experience this aquatic wonderland for up close wildlife encounters. The kids will also learn about the local Nhanda and Malgana culture and history as they paddle the bay and lagoon and why this area is a ‘strong spiritual place’.

Aboriginal Art and Dreamtime Stories

Take your little budding artist to Maalinup Aboriginal Gallery these holidays to create their own Dot Painting masterpiece. This fun, organic and hands-on art workshop is taught by Dale Tilbrook, a Wardandi Bibbulmun woman. Dale will introduce the kids to traditional and contemporary Aboriginal art and give a demonstration on dot painting techniques. By the end of the workshop your little artist will have learnt about Wardandi culture, connection to Country and have listen to Dreamtime Stories. And walk away with their very own artwork ready to impress friends!
